Exact KB Photo Compressor
Re-encode a photo so its file size lands inside a target KB value (with tolerance). Useful for forms and apps that reject uploads above a byte limit. Runs in your browser.
- No upload — processed on this device

How it works and what to expect
How it works
- Upload the photo that is over the size limit.
- Set the target size in KB — e.g. 200 KB with 5 KB tolerance for a “max 200 KB” form.
- The engine re-encodes repeatedly, adjusting quality up or down until the size is inside the band.
- Only when the target truly cannot be reached does it downscale dimensions — and it tells you.
When the target cannot be reached
A small target on a large, detailed photo sometimes needs a much lower quality. Browsers cannot always hit an exact byte count, so the tool returns the closest result and clearly labels it, rather than shrinking the photo invisibly.
Privacy
Compression happens locally. Your photo is never uploaded.
Practical guidance
Using this tool well
When it is the right answer, what tends to go wrong, and what to check before you rely on the result.
Why use it
Byte limits stated in KB are the requirements you cannot eyeball. The tool works backwards from the number — adjusting encoding until the file lands inside the target — which is tedious to do by hand.
Typical situations
- An application portal rejects a photo above a stated KB value.
- Several photos must all fit the same byte budget.
- You want a smaller file without changing the pixel dimensions.
Common problems
The target cannot be reached at full dimensions
At some quality the file is already as small as it can be for those pixels. Reduce the dimensions slightly, or raise the allowed tolerance, rather than expecting an impossible result.
The result looks poor at a very low target
The target is a hard constraint and quality is what gives. If the photo matters visually, negotiate the target or start from a smaller, sharper original.
Landed slightly outside the tolerance
Encoding does not allow byte-exact output in every case. The tool works within the tolerance you set — widen it a little if the checker is unusually strict.
Check before you submit
- Confirm the final file size sits inside the stated limit.
- Confirm the pixel dimensions are unchanged, if the requirement also states them.
- Inspect the image at full size for compression artefacts.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I hit a specific KB target?
Yes. You set the approximate KB target and the tool iterates quality to land nearby while keeping the photo's pixel dimensions.

This tool inside a workflow
A ready-made sequence that solves a whole job — this tool is one step in it.
Cyber café & service centre workflows
The tools a cyber café or online service centre runs all day: print customers' passport and ID photos, prepare documents for printing, combine application pages, and keep the queue moving without uploading anyone's files.
Passport, visa & ID photo workflow
Make compliant-style photo sheets, exact-size files for online forms, and clean prints — passport, visa and ID photo requirements all start the same way: a decent portrait and the correct dimensions.
Job & exam application documents
Applications usually demand a photo at an exact size, a signature, and every page combined into one tidy PDF. This workflow covers the whole loop in your browser — no uploads, no account.
